Background of the Study
Political socialization refers to the process through which individuals acquire their political attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, influenced by various factors such as family, media, education, and social groups. In Gombe Local Government Area (LGA), political socialization plays a crucial role in shaping the political behavior of citizens, including voter turnout. The higher the level of political awareness and engagement fostered through socialization, the more likely individuals are to participate in elections and political activities (Khalid & Hassan, 2024).
This study aims to explore the impact of political socialization on voter turnout in Gombe LGA, particularly in the context of the 2023 general elections. It will examine the various agents of political socialization and their influence on individuals' decision to vote, considering factors such as age, education, and media exposure (Abubakar & Musa, 2023).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While political socialization is acknowledged as a key determinant of political behavior, there is limited research on how it specifically affects voter turnout in Gombe LGA. Despite various efforts to increase political engagement, voter turnout remains inconsistent. This study seeks to evaluate the extent to which political socialization influences voter participation, providing insights into strategies that could enhance political engagement in Gombe LGA.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the impact of political socialization on voter turnout in Gombe LGA.
To assess the role of educational institutions and media in shaping political socialization in Gombe LGA.
To analyze the relationship between political socialization and political participation among different demographic groups in Gombe LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
How does political socialization influence voter turnout in Gombe LGA?
What role do educational institutions and media play in political socialization in Gombe LGA?
How does political socialization affect political participation across different demographic groups in Gombe LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Political socialization significantly influences voter turnout in Gombe LGA.
Educational institutions and media play a key role in political socialization in Gombe LGA.
Political socialization affects political participation across different demographic groups in Gombe LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of how political socialization impacts voter turnout, providing valuable insights for policymakers and electoral bodies on how to enhance political engagement and participation in Gombe LGA. By identifying the key agents and factors of political socialization, the findings can inform strategies aimed at increasing voter turnout in future elections (Muhammad & Ahmed, 2024).
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the role of political socialization in voter turnout in Gombe LGA during the 2023 general elections. Limitations include challenges in measuring the indirect effects of socialization and potential biases in survey responses regarding political engagement.
